How much does Leica GEB221 battery regeneration cost and when is it worth it?

Axis Baterie · Updated:

Regenerating a Leica GEB221 battery costs 73 € for the 5800 mAh variant and 88 € for the 6800 mAh variant. We regenerate the GEB211 for 37 € or 44 €, and the GEB334 for 30 € or 35 €. The price includes free diagnostics, new high-current cells, a load test and a 12-month warranty. In most cases this is a fraction of the price of a new original battery.

What wears out in a Leica battery

Leica GEB batteries power total stations, digital levels, GNSS receivers and field controllers. Each one consists of a housing with latches, contacts, a BMS (the electronics that manage charging and discharging) and a pack of Li-ion 18650 cells. After several years of field work it is not the housing or the electronics that lose their durability, but the cells: their internal resistance rises and their capacity falls.

When you buy a new original, you pay again for every component, although only the cells need replacing. With regeneration we keep the working Leica housing and electronics and replace the whole cell pack.

What the regeneration price includes

  • Free diagnostics: measurement of the resting voltage and internal resistance of the cells, and a check of the BMS, latches and contacts.
  • New high-current Li-ion 18650 cells, spot-welded with nickel strip.
  • BMS calibration to the capacity of the new pack, so that the total station shows the real charge level.
  • Load test: a full charge and discharge cycle with capacity, voltage and temperature checks.
  • Courier label and return of the battery in line with the regulations for shipping lithium batteries (UN3480, UN3481).

When regeneration is worth it

Regeneration makes sense when the housing is not cracked and the battery has not been flooded or overheated. Typical signs of worn cells are the total station shutting down during measurement, a clearly shorter runtime and GKL charger errors. If diagnostics show that regeneration is impossible or not cost-effective, we contact you and do not charge for the service.
