# Why does the total station shut down during reflectorless measurement?

> Why a Leica total station shuts down during reflectorless measurement despite 30–40% on the indicator. Cause, diagnosis and a fix for stable power.

If a Leica total station shuts down at the moment of measurement although the indicator shows 30–40% charge, the cause is usually worn battery cells. At the moment of measurement the EDM rangefinder and the modem draw much more current, and cells with high internal resistance cannot hold their voltage. The total station shuts down before the indicator has a chance to show a low charge level.

## Where the sudden shutdowns come from

In standby mode the total station draws little current, and the battery voltage looks correct. At the moment of measurement, especially a reflectorless one over a longer distance, the EDM rangefinder briefly draws much more energy. If a GSM modem or a radio link is working at the same time, the load is even higher.

New cells have low internal resistance, so the voltage drops only slightly. In worn cells the resistance rises, and during a current surge the voltage falls below the threshold at which the total station shuts down. The charge indicator is based on a measurement at rest, so it can show 30–40% at the same time.

## Consequences for field work

- a measurement is interrupted and unsaved points are lost,
- the total station has to be restarted, and often the station has to be levelled and oriented again,
- unpredictable runtime makes it hard to plan the day in the field.

## How to check whether the battery is at fault

1. **Test another battery.** If the problem does not occur with a second, healthy battery, the cause is in the battery, not in the instrument.
2. **Note when the total station shuts down.** Shutdowns only at the moment of measurement or data transmission point to a voltage drop under load.
3. **Check the contacts.** A restart when the total station or tripod is moved may indicate a contact problem, which we describe in the article [on diagnosing the contacts](https://batterygeo.com/blog/total-station-restarts-battery-contacts).
4. **Consider the age of the battery.** After several years of intensive use, especially in low temperatures, cells lose the ability to deliver high current.

## The fix: replacing the cells with high-current ones

During regeneration we replace all cells with branded high-current cells that hold their voltage when the current draw briefly rises. We keep the original Leica housing and electronics and calibrate the BMS after fitting. Every pack goes through a load test matching total station operation, including the current pulses typical of EDM measurement.

Regeneration prices for individual models are listed in the article [on the cost of Leica battery regeneration](https://batterygeo.com/blog/leica-geb-battery-regeneration-cost).

## Good to know

- If the total station also shuts down with a full, new battery, the problem is not in the battery. In that case we recommend contacting a surveying equipment service.

## FAQ

### Why does the indicator show 40% while the total station shuts down?

The indicator is based on the voltage at rest. Under load, worn cells lose voltage much faster, so the total station shuts down even though the indicator still shows some charge in reserve.

### Can the shutdowns damage the total station?

The shutdowns themselves usually do not damage the total station, but they cause loss of unsaved data and interruptions in work. It is worth replacing the cells as soon as possible.

### Will the problem disappear after regeneration?

If worn cells were the cause, yes. New high-current cells hold their voltage during current surges, and we load-test every pack before shipping.
